MLA Report (22 July 2008)
I have had a great summer so far as I’ve been able to attend your town fairs and parades. It’s been great to be able to chat with so many of you this summer. Last fall, I had the honour of being named Environment Minister. My duties often keep me in Regina or on the road. I thank you all for your patience and understanding as I am not in the constituency as much or as often as I would like. Special thanks to my constituency assistant, Whitney Friesen, for keeping things running while I’m away from the office. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Whitney – he’s there to help!
The dry conditions in the North this year has caused a marked increase in forest fire activity. While the fire season is not over yet, our forest fire fighters have done an incredible job. Our first priority is the protection and security of people and communities. Big thank you to those who are working tirelessly to protect us by fighting fires this year. Please do your part and be extra careful while out camping this summer. Make sure your campfire is completely extinguished before leaving. We should all do what we can to ensure a safer season.
Also making sure our communities are safe is the RCMP. I had the honour of attending the graduation celebrations of Troop 47 at the RCMP depot in Regina recently. These men and women are committed to our safety and security and deserve our respect and gratitude. Theirs is not an easy task but I know with the training they have received, that they will do a great job.
I was also able to attend the grand openings of new SARCAN recycling depots in Wakaw and Regina. SARCAN anticipates that they will receive the 4 billionth beverage container for recycling this fall. That is an exceptional success story and it wouldn’t be possible without the involvement of Saskatchewan residents. Congratulations to you and to SARCAN for your dedication to recycling in Saskatchewan.
